5 Fun Ways to Get Your Kids Excited for Family Photos | Monroe Family Photographer

Children & Family, Tips and Tricks

Tips from Your Go-To Monroe Family Photographer

Photographing families is always an adventure—and no two sessions are ever the same! As a Monroe family photographer, I’ve seen it all: the perfectly posed smiles, the goofy giggles, and yes, even a few stubborn stances.

While parents are usually ready to roll, kids sometimes need a little extra encouragement. That’s why I’ve put together five fun and foolproof ways to get your kiddos genuinely excited about your upcoming family photo session.

A family of six sits closely together on brick steps at Vines Park in Loganville GA, smiling warmly. Their relaxed poses and casual clothing suggest a joyful, informal atmosphere.

1. Let Them Choose Their Outfit (Sort of)

Give your child 2–3 outfit options that you’ve already pre-approved. Letting them pick between them gives them a sense of independence and ownership. You’ll be amazed at how much more confident—and cooperative—they’ll be on session day when they feel like they made a big decision.

2. Plan a Reward for Afterward

Let your kids know that once photos are done, the whole family is going to do something fun! Whether it’s a movie night with popcorn, ice cream after dinner, or a trip to the playground, a little post-session bribe can go a long way.

3. Talk It Up Like It’s a Big Deal

Your excitement = their excitement. If you talk about the session like it’s something fun and special, they’ll feed off your energy. Use phrases like, “We’re doing something really cool this weekend!” or “You’re going to be a photo star!”

4. Show Them Other Family Sessions

Let your kids see examples of other families having fun during photo sessions—bonus points if it’s someone they recognize from their favorite show or YouTube channel. When they see others smiling and having a great time, they’ll be more open to doing the same.

5. Mention Social Media (If They’re Into It)

If your child is old enough to care about likes, let them know that some of the best photos might be shared on Instagram or Facebook. They’ll love the idea of getting to see themselves online and might even ask you to tag them!

Final Tip: Your Mood Matters Most

Remember, your attitude sets the tone. If you show up stressed, rushed, or annoyed, your kids will pick up on it instantly. But if you arrive smiling, relaxed, and ready for fun, there’s a much better chance they’ll follow your lead.
