Every summer, when Vacation Bible School rolls around, I know exactly where I’ll be: camera in hand, sneakers on, and surrounded by a sea of excited, sticky, joy-filled kids shouting memory verses and belting out worship songs that will be permanently lodged in my head for the next two weeks.
And honestly? I love every second of it.
Yes, it’s loud. Yes, it’s chaotic. Yes, I absolutely crash on the couch the minute I walk in the door every night. But it’s also one of my favorite things I get to do with the gift God’s given me.
Photography is how I serve. It’s how I worship. It’s my way of blessing others. And VBS gives me the most colorful, action-packed, Jesus-filled canvas to work with.
My own kids are there right in the middle of the mayhem. They are dancing, laughing, glue-sticking crafts to everything in sight and I get to quietly (okay, sometimes not so quietly) chase behind them and all their new friends with my camera. Capturing the wonder. The silliness. The worship. The friendship. The moments that happen once and are gone in a flash (get it?).
Every night, after the last craft is collected and the last snack wrapper tossed, I stay up late putting together a slideshow. A highlight reel of the day’s best moments to play the next morning. The kids love it. The squeals and finger-pointing as they see themselves on the screen are the sweetest reward. And every year, someone tells me that the slideshow is their favorite part of VBS. Which makes my tired photographer heart melt a little.
But tonight… I got the kind of compliment that hits deeper.
A sweet friend texted me this:
“My parents have listened to three songs about Jesus today. (Probably the most gospel they’ve listened to ever) all because they are scouring the VBS videos for pics of my kids.”
And I just sat there for a second and let that sink in.
Because that’s why I do it.
Yes, it’s for the kids. Yes, it’s for the memories. Yes, it’s because I genuinely love being part of this week. But sometimes, it reaches even further than I expect. Into homes, into hearts, into places the gospel might not have gone without a few photos and a catchy song.
I’ll be back next year, camera in hand, songs in my head, and a slideshow queued up.
Because God uses all kinds of gifts to shine His light.
And what a joy it is to be part of that.
